Introduction
 
 This year, the Society of Electrophotography of Japan (SEPJ) sees the 40th anniversary since 1958. SEPJ is proud great deal of world-wide contributions in the image science and hard copy technology fields. Taking this opportunity, we have an International Conference on imaging science and technologies named "Pan-Pacific Imaging Conference/Japan Hardcopy '98 (PPIC/JH'98) to celebrate the 40th anniversary with extending the SEPJ annual conference, Japan Hardcopy '98, to establish a more strong network with Asia, North America and European countries.
 The PPIC/JH'98 Conference committee cordially invite you to join us and let discuss and consider the future imaging and hardcopy technologies with us. The Conference affords all of participants a good opportunity to learn about the latest technical development and to find the future direction of imaging science and technologies.
 The conference will consist of everyday keynote papers, valuable reviews on the state-of-arts in each country of Pan-Pacific rim, invited technical and contributed poster presentations. All contributed technical papers will be presented in 2 hour poster session with 5 min oral preview. Official language is English.

 " The Evolution of Electrostatic Marking"

 Copying and printing technologies based on electrostatic marking have evolved to high levels of performance over the past 40 years. Xerography is the dominant electrostatic marking technology with an estimated 50 billion dollars a year in worldwide revenues. In recent years, there has been a high growth rate of digital color xerography for office and publishing market applications. For short run color printing, digital color xerography is advantaged relative to offset printing in providing lower cost documents with high image quality at moderate to high printing speeds. Furthermore, the digital presses enable the printing of variable (personalized) information with electronic document collation. Due to these advantages, digital color presses based on electrostatic marking technologies are poised to capture an increased share of the commercial printing market in the years ahead. To understand the trend in the image quality and productivity performance of these printing systems, the technologies utilized for the critical imaging and development subsystems in current and emerging electrostatic marking products for short run digital color printing markets are reviewed. Understanding the challenges and limitations of the imaging and development subsystems performance is helpful in anticipating the continued evolution of improved image quality and productivity performance for 21st century digital color presses based on electrostatic marking.

 "Capabilities and Potential of Thermal Ink Jet Technology"

 There is an observable cycle of development in the lifetime of printing technologies. In the beginning they are focused on an application for which they are well suited and to which they make an immediate improvement and contribution. Then comes a period during which the technology is explored in terms of its flexibility and range of application. In the course of that time other technologies may be obsoleted or greatly limited in their usefulness. The history of offset lithography and its impact upon letterpress and rotogravure methods immediately come to mind in this regard. More recently, non-impact technologies have greatly reduced the need for impact printers and the typewriter often finds itself to be limited to the production of multiple-copy forms. Currently, advances in ink jet and xerographic technologies raise similar questions. With the aid of significant computational power to implement sophisticated image processing methods these technologies have shown an outstanding range of application. Today, in the case of ink jet, printers are often purchased based upon the ability to print a full color, photographic image. The implications for photography are as obvious as they are far reaching. This paper will examine these issues with respect to thermal ink jet technology and its position in the evolutionary process described above.

 "New Printer Concept in Multi Media Age"

 With the progress of CPU performance, PC has been becoming a multimedia tool. Also with the progress of PC, the type of the documents in our offices has changed a lot from simple letters or static figures to so-called multimedia documents comprising sound/audio and motion pictures. For the output device of such multimedia documents, we offer our Multi Media Printer (MMP) which is bases on the CD-R/RW technology. Conventional way of recording documents has been by paper which can be read at any time and anywhere and can also be used as preserving media because of its archivability. We have tried to give this important role of storing documents to some electronic media and evaluate the CD-R/RW media as paper in electronics age because of its readability by currently diffused PCs with CD-ROM drive and because of its high volume processing capability of multimedia documents. From the viewpoint of environmental protection, we must mention to it that western developed countries including Japan consume paper equal to 100 times of that used in countries of other areas whose population is, as a whole, equivalent only to 12 % of the whole world. However, it is certain that in the course of time these countries would also have been more developed and their paper consumption would burst out increasing. There might be a realistic risk of rapidly losing the natural greenery. We will then strongly recommend to use our CD-R/RW solution (MMP) as a replacement of paper and contribute to saving trees on earth by the reduction of paper consumption.
